A dynamic water-privileged community, Eastport boasts a unique history. In 1998, when the residents felt that their community would be jeopardized by the temporary closing of the Spa Creek drawbridge for repairs, they “seceded” from Annapolis, Maryland, and the Maritime Republic of Eastport (MRE) was created. A “war” in the form of an annual tug-of-war that raises money for charity was established. The event has since become a popular time-honored tradition.
