Crownsville’s history traces back to the colonial period when the area was part of the land grants given by the British Crown. It was predominantly agricultural, with tobacco serving as the primary crop. In the 19th century, the community grew as a rural area with farms and small settlements.
A significant part of Crownsville’s history is the establishment of the Crownsville State Hospital in 1911, which was created to serve African American patients. The hospital became notorious for its overcrowding, poor conditions, and mistreatment of patients. It operated until its closure in 2004, and the site has since become a focal point of historical and social studies on mental health care and racial inequality.
Today, Crownsville’s residents enjoy its natural beauty, including access to the Chesapeake Bay and areas for hiking and birdwatching.
