Brief History of St. Michaels, MD
Brief History of
St. Michaels, MD
St. Michaels was named after St. Michael the Archangel by some of its earliest European settlers, most likely Anglicans, in the mid-1600s. Other highlights in its history include its development as a small maritime and farming community with an emphasis on shipbuilding in the 1700s. It earned its reputation as the “Town that Fooled the British” during the War of 1812. When British forces attempted to attack the town in 1813, a clever ruse was devised by residents who hoisted lanterns high into trees outside the town to mislead British gunners, causing cannon fire from their ships to overshoot its intended targets, resulting in much of the town being spared.
Present-day St. Michaels balances its historical identity with modern amenities and continues to attract visitors for its seasonal festivals, waterfront activities, and baked-in small-town charm.
